  29.  "Shareware" is a concept where you have an opportunity to try a software
  30.  program before  you  buy  it.  Shareware  is  comparable  to  commercial
  31.  software in quality, but not usually in  price.  Shareware  is  normally
  32.  much less expensive because the author has not spent the many thousands,
  33.  even millions,  of  dollars  on  advertising  that  commercial  software
  34.  companies do. Thus, the overhead is much less  and  your  cost  reflects
  35.  this. If you use a shareware program for a reasonable period of time you
  36.  are required to register it. Please honor the author's registration  fee
  37.  and register the programs you use. Many shareware programs  on  this  cd
  38.  required hundred's of hours to develop. Many of the programs you will be
  39.  using were written by authors who fully depend on the support of  honest
  40.  users to continue making affordable software.   Your  registration  does
  41.  count! ...not only to the author and his/her family, but also  when  you
  42.  register there are usually many additional benefits that are available.

  45.         *** Information on the file  view  and  retrieval  program   ***

  47.                                 CREAM.exe
  48.  
  49.  This is a view and retrieval program that will assist you in  retrieving
  50.  and  viewing the files on this disk,  along with their size,  date,  and
  51.  description. To run this program, simply type "Cream" and  press  enter.
  52.  There is no setup required. Cream.exe is in the directory with this file
  53.  you are reading now.  Cream.exe is  NOT  for use outside this cd. Please
  54.  do not place it for download on a BBS.
  55.  
  56.  The most unique and appreciated feature of the Cream of  the  Crop  view
  57.  and retrieval program (Cream.exe) is that it is the  only  such  program
  58.  that runs entirely on the cd. This means that you avoid setup procedures
  59.  that wasted time and disc space. The features that require  searches  on
  60.  the cd are loaded into memory  for  instant  results,  making  this  the
  61.  fastest program of its kind.
  62.  
  63.      The most notable feature is the option to display the files  in  the
  64.  Work Directory that have been  uncompressed  from  the  cd  ...AND  then
  65.  browse the text files or execute .EXE and .COM  programs  or  uncompress
  66.  .ZIP, .LZH and .ARJ archives that the author may have placed inside  the
  67.  archives that are on the cd. The browse program is very complete with 35
  68.  features including search, block mark for printing (or writing to disk),
  69.  text markers and Hex toggle... just to mention a few.  <F1> will display
  70.  a help menu with all the  features  available  with  the  menu  you  are
  71.  viewing. <Alt-D> drops to DOS from any menu.
  72.  
  73.  The default for Yes and No questions is in upper case.  For  example  if
  74.  you are prompted with a message saying: "Do you want to continue? [Y/n]"
  75.  Pressing any key except "N" or "n" will default  to  the  "Yes"  choice.
  76.  Sometimes there is a Yes, Quit, or any other key to start  over  option.
  77.  In this case any key other than "Y", "y", "Q" or "q" will allow  you  to
  78.  restart the operation.

  80.  The default Work Directory is on your C: drive and the  path  to  it  is
  81.  determined by the Volume Label of the cd  you  are  using.  If  you  are
  82.  working with Cream 10 the default path to your  Work  Directory  will be
  83.  C:\CREAM_10. You can override this default path by starting this program
  84.  with a command line parameter that contains a "custom default path"  ie.
  85.  "Cream  D:\TEMP"   Note: Only the default path or  custom  default  path
  86.  can be erased when you are prompted with the option to erase  your  Work
  87.  Directory at the "normal" conclusion of a  session.   This  is a  safety
  88.  feature to prevent regrettable mistakes.  You will not be prompted  with
  89.  this option and the files in your Work Directory will not be  erased  if
  90.  you terminate Cream with the <AltX> shortcut.

  92.  1.  Commands  that  are  available  with  almost  every  menu  include:
  93.  <F1> = Help           <AltX> = Exit       <AltD> = Drop to DOS
  94.  <ESC> = Return to previous menu           <AltW> = Work Directory
  95.  <AltM> Moves the files from the current Work Directory to a new directory
  96.  <Enter> = Process the highlighted/selected/tagged option(s)
  97.  
  98.  2. Additional commands that are available when viewing the Work Directory:
  99.  <Enter> Execute, browse or uncompress the highlighted file.
  100.  <AltP> Print the highlighted file.
  101.  
  102.  3. Additional commands that are available when viewing a category of files:
  103.  Pressing alpha-numeric keys serve as a search feature.
  104.  <Enter> Copy or Uncompress tagged files
  105.  <AltS> Search for key words or phrases in the file descriptions.
  106.  <AltC> Clear search markers
  107.  
  108.  Note: The option to unarchive files does not allow the root directory on
  109.  your C: drive to be used as a target directory. This is a safety feature
  110.  to protect your system's configuration files Config.sys and Autoexec.bat
  111.  from accidentally being overwritten with examples that may have been in-
  112.  cluded in an archive on the cd.

  115.                         Notes on File Compression
  116.  
  117.  The programs on this cd are compressed with Pkzip from  Pkware  Inc.  If
  118.  you use Pkware for any purpose other than the one  provided  to  extract
  119.  files from this cd from within Cream.exe you are  required  to  register
  120.  your own copy.
  121.  
  122.  The programs on this and other shareware  cd  discs  are  compressed  in
  123.  order to save space and keep all the necessary  support  files  together
  124.  with the program that needs them  to  run.  Compression  also  makes  it
  125.  possible to include the same amount of data that would  require 3  or  4
  126.  cds in an uncompressed format.

  128.  Many authors do not allow their programs to  be  distributed  under  the
  129.  shareware concept if they are not compressed - without  the  distributor
  130.  paying a fee for each disc distributed. This is because they  know  that
  131.  it is unlikely they will ever receive  any  registration  from  programs
  132.  that are distributed in a format that is already set  up  and  ready  to
  133.  run. Please support the shareware concept and register the programs that
  134.  you use.

  136.                               Extra Features!
  137.  
  138.  Also included in the root directory is a program named AVGage.exe. This
  139.  program will calculate the average date of ALL the ZIP files on a cdrom
  140.  disc and return the average age/date of the disc. This utility can also
  141.  be used to find the average date of a group of files in a  subdirectory
  142.  or on a hard drive. To use this utility in that manner place it in  you
  143.  path and change to the directory you wish to process before you execute
  144.  AVGage.exe.

  146.                             A Word of Caution
  147.  
  148.  All risks involved with using the programs on this cd are assumed by you
  149.  alone. Some programs on this cd, especially those  that  manipulate  the
  150.  data on your hard drive, (ie. optimizers and low level disk  management)
  151.  can potentially cause loss of data. Be careful!  Reading  the  docs  and
  152.  taking serious the warnings is the only reasonable thing to do.

  154.                            BBS Support Programs
  155.  
  156.  Cream of the Crop has many features to assist Sysops in setting  up and
  157.  running the cd online.  All the automatic  setup  utilities  have  been
  158.  modified to identify and correctly setup Cream of the Crop with systems
  159.  running cd rom changers under a single drive letter. No manual  editing
  160.  will be necessary.  Most of the automatic setup utilities will allow  a
  161.  Sysop to insert the volume label before the  file  category  name.  For
  162.  example, "Games" can be displayed to the callers as "(Cream_??)  Games"
  163.  This feature will enable callers to more easily locate the latest files
  164.  and know the cd they are located on. This feature is not  available  on
  165.  all the automatic bbs setup utilities because the length  of  the  file
  166.  category description field afforded by the bbs is sometimes  too  short
  167.  to add this extra information.  This feature is optional  and  will  be
  168.  asked when running the programs and answering for the normal questions.

  170.  Cream also has a Wildcat drop in database  (Look for the drop in file -
  171.  located  in  the  root  directory)  to  assist  Wildcat BBS  Sysops  in
  172.  rapidly/easily setting up this cd.  Thanks to Gene Geiger for this help
  173.  and *NO* thanks to the folks at Mustang Software who promised technical
  174.  assistance but never helped.
  175.  
  176.  Cream also has a utility that will build the control file for  RomDoor.
  177.  Execute Romdoor.exe and answer the  questions.
  178.  
  179.  Cream also has a utility that will build the control file for EZrom and
  180.  Sfrom.  Execute  EZ_SFrom.exe  and  answer  the   questions.
  181.  
  182.  Cream  also has file  descriptions in  every  directory under the  name
  183.  File.bbs that have the extended portion of the file descriptions broken
  184.  up to resemble the Pcboard format.  Note: you can also use AnyStyle.exe
  185.  to build file descriptions any way you like.. and it will increment the
  186.  file names and put them in on your hard drive.
  187.  
  188.  If you run a Maximus, Proboard, Remote Access, Quick  BBS,  PcBoard,  or
  189.  Spitfire BBS one of the following programs  may?  automatically  set  up
  190.  this disk for your bbs file database structure in  only a  few  minutes.
  191.  Since the file base structures used by these  BBS's change frequently it
  192.  is likely that some of these programs may not work with a later release.
  193.  ALL of these programs will AUTOMATICALLY copy (and correctly format) the
  194.  Files.bbs from this cd to suit the structure of your bbs  and  increment
  195.  the file names, placing the "Files.<x>" ( or File<XX>.bbs in some cases)
  196.  into the directory you specify. Please backup your file data base before
  197.  you run any of these programs. For an extra  precaution,  you  can  copy
  198.  your file databases to a temporary  directory  and  use  your  temporary
  199.  directory to set up this disk. If the setup  is  satisfactory  when  you
  200.  view it with your BBS management program (or text editor) then  you  can
  201.  copy it to your BBS home directory. These programs are NOT  to  be  used
  202.  outside the scope of this cd rom disk. Please do not place them on a BBS
  203.  for downloading.

  205.                                AnyStyle.exe
  206.  
  207.  If you run a BBS software that was not mentioned above this utility will
  208.  build file listing in almost _ANY_ format.   You may want to convert the
  209.  file descriptions into your favorite format even if you don't run a BBS.
  210.  This utility will do that.  You have numerous combinations of options to
  211.  choose from.  You can include or exclude the file size, and date columns
  212.  or commas in the file sizes _AND_ wrap the extended portions of the file
  213.  descriptions to comply with any format you like...  including  insertion
  214.  of control characters.   You also have 3 options as to the style of file
  215.  naming incrementing. Even with all these options it is still very simple
  216.  to operate.  Just execute  "AnyStyle"  from the directory with this file
  217.  you are reading now and answer the questions.
  218.  
  219.                                MX_Cream.exe
  220.  
  221.  This is the program to set up  Maximus  BBS.  Actually  it  builds  your
  222.  "Filearea.ctl" control file then you can run FB to compile the  changes.
  223.  It is important that your Filearea.ctl be correctly  formatted  so  that
  224.  the last area can be located to provide accurate file  naming  when  the
  225.  Files.bbs are reformatted and copied to your  fixed  media  path.  "Area
  226.  <X>" MUST begin on column #1 (at least  for  the  last  record  in  your
  227.  Filearea.ctl  control file).  Sorry  only   numeric   incrimination   is
  228.  supported. (ie. The  format:  Area  A,  Area  B,  Area  C,  etc  is  NOT
  229.  supported.) This program has several added options that will be  obvious
  230.  to you when you run it. You may want to read the section  of  your  docs
  231.  that explains the advantages and disadvantages  of  including  the  file
  232.  size and date column before you execute this program and  have  to  make
  233.  that decision.
  234.  
  235.                                SF_Cream.exe
  236.  
  237.  This is the program to set up Spitfire BBS. You will need  to  know  the
  238.  path  to  your  Sffarea.dat  file  and  your  display  directory   where
  239.  "Sffiles.<x>" will be placed, before you run this program.  The extended
  240.  descriptions  will  be  automatically  formatted  with  the  #2  control
  241.  character for Spitfire when the Sffiles.<x> are being  created  in  your
  242.  display directory.

  244.                                QB_Cream.exe
  245.  
  246.  This is the program to set up Quick BBS. You will need to know the  path
  247.  to your Filecfg.dat and your "File list" path directory before  you  run
  248.  this program. When you use this program you will be given an  option  to
  249.  override the default and  select a  different  record  number  to  begin
  250.  setting up this disc. This option is dangerous if you do not  understand
  251.  its purpose.  If you have a empty record in your  file  data  base  (the
  252.  area name description field is keyed on to determine  an  empty  record)
  253.  QB_Cream will will find it first and assume that it has reached the  end
  254.  of your file settings. This record number will be  the  default  setting
  255.  used to begin setting up this cd. You should know the record number that
  256.  is your highest file area setting to verify (and correct  if  necessary)
  257.  the default setting. This option to use  your  own  default  setting  to
  258.  begin the setup of this cd is also useful if you wish to  _insert_  this
  259.  cd in place of one you are removing.  The cd  you  are  removing  _MUST_
  260.  have used at least 27 file areas  in  order  that  sufficient  space  be
  261.  available to insert the 27 file areas on this disc  without  overwriting
  262.  the next cd's file directory records.  If all this is unclear to you  it
  263.  would be a good idea to call 334-824-2552 for support.

  265.                                RA_Cream.exe
  266.  
  267.  This is the program to set up Remote Access version 5.0  or  later.  You
  268.  will need to know the path to your Files.ra and your  "Alternative  file
  269.  list path for read-only media" path before you run  this  program.  When
  270.  you use this program you will be given an option to override the default
  271.  and select a different record number to begin setting up this disc. This
  272.  option is dangerous if you do not understand its purpose.  If you have a
  273.  empty record in your file data base (the area name description field  is
  274.  keyed on to determine an empty record) RA_Cream will will find it  first
  275.  and assume that it has reached the  end  of  your  file  settings.  This
  276.  record number will be the default setting used to begin setting up  this
  277.  cd. You should know the record number that is  your  highest  file  area
  278.  setting to verify (and correct if necessary) the default  setting.  This

  288.  
  289.  This is a simple program to _assist_ the setup of Pcboard BBS.  PC_Cream
  290.  will copy the Files.bbs file listings to the directory of your choice on
  291.  your hard drive * AND * increment the  file  listing  names,  ie.  Dir1,
  292.  Dir2,  Dir3  etc.  The  extended  description  portion   of   the   file
  293.  descriptions will be correctly formatted for Pcboard format. The listing
  294.  of the file area descriptions is included (under the name DIR)  in  this
  295.  directory.
  296.  
  297.                                PB_Cream.exe
  298.  
  299.  This is the program to set up a Proboard BBS. You will need to know  the
  300.  path to your FileCfg.pro and the path to your "listing file"  directory.
  301.  Since Proboard (and the structure for FileCfg.pro) is written C and this
  302.  program is written in Pascal it is not easy to determine how  many  file
  303.  areas you currently have setup. If you are currently  incrementing  your
  304.  file listings in the File<x>.bbs naming  format  you  should  set  up  a
  305.  separate directory for this program to place the file listings for  each
  306.  version of Cream of the Crop. The file listings will be named File1.bbs,
  307.  File2.bbs etc. and the corresponding path and names of these files  will
  308.  be written to your FileCfg.pro. Remember to run  "Pbutil  FI"  when  you
  309.  finish to reindex your file base.   It has been reported  that  Proboard
  310.  cannot correctly display the filesize when commas are used. This program
  311.  will remove the commas from the filesize.

  313.                                 TB_Cream.exe
  314.  
  315.  This program will setup TBBS. Just run it and answer the questions.  It
  316.  will build the .FAR files and reformat the file listings to comply with
  317.  TBBS standards.  The comma in the  file  size  will  NOT  be  included.

  319.                               RB_Cream.exe
  320.  
  321.  This program will setup RBBS. Just run it and answer the questions.  It
  322.  will build the .DAT files and reformat the file listings to comply with
  323.  RBBS standards.

  325.                               Crm2tag.exe
  326.  
  327.  This program will setup TAG.  Just run it and answer the questions.  It
  328.  was written by Jonathan Murray  and  supplied freely to help his fellow
  329.  TAGBBS sysops set up any volume of Cream of the Crop. The file "Crm2tag
  330.  .doc" can be found in the directory with this file you are reading now.
